Team Bofa4x4 'Mac Taster'

When it was confirmed that Team Scrapheap had a place on the Mac one of the first priorites was to get some much needed practice in; Team Bofa's St. Valentines Mac taster was just the ticket!

The event took in several counties with a mixture of both on and off-road action, several well known spots such as tissington ford aswell as rarely visited greenlanes were experienced by all: a proper 'mini-mac!'. The navigation was a combination of Tulip Navigation* and Navigational Scatters** with the inclusion of Questions 'en-route' involving the surroundings. Throughout the six stages all the teams entered had their skills tested throughly, with only a few missed questions and wrong turns all the teams had an enjoyable 'taste' of the Mac. It wasnt only the navigation which pushed the limit, every team members stomachs was tested with hearty breakfasts and a teatime Cavery also being part of the challenge!

The results saw Team Scrapheap take second place with the real winner being Macmillan Cancer Support. In total £243.58 was raised for both Team Bofa and Team Scrapheap. A big Thanks must go to Steve 'crouching tiger' Raybould (picture below) and also the marshalls/behind the scenes helpers! A much appreciated and well ran event!

Roll on the Mac!

* Tulip navigation - often seen in Professional Rallies; a set of directions consisting of junction maps and intermediate and overall milages. See the below Picture.

** Navigational Scatter - A set of Grid References or similar are plotted upon a Ordance Survey map; it is then up to the team to choose the shortest and most appropiate route ensuring all points marked are passed.

Terratrip and Phonekit Fitted

As with the nearly all of the Land Rovers previously owned by Team Scrapheap the Terratrip 303+ has made an appearance; this rally computer will allow us accurate distance, time and speed reading from the SLABS ECU read out on the Discovery 2. Instead of the usual 'homebrew' mount we decided to opt for a genuine Terratrip mount; as can be seen from the photographs below its made for a 'professional' looking install.

Once it was all wired including the DSI unit (speedo pulse sensor) it was time to calibrate it using the Vascar markings just off the local major A-road, the test show it to be accurate to within two hundredths of a mile. Unfortunately the speedo feed seems to have a constant pulse from the ECU causing it to count up slowly; hopefully this will be sorted in time for the Mac.

In combination with the above fitment we thought it advisable to for a Handsfree car kit and charger into the vehicle; the Bury car kit allows any phone to be fitted with the appropriate adapter ... perfect for Team Scrapheap due to the driver owning a Nokia and the Co-Driver owning a Blackberry!

Prep has started

Well with the Mac constantly nearing with each day its time to do all those jobs that need doing on daisy in order to make her correctly 'kitted out' for the tasks that lie ahead.

A start has been made on fixing the usual Disco roof leak; with the aid of polythene and large amounts of duct tape! Stickers are on order, the roofrack's ordered and being made as this is typed and food supplies/lists are getting longer by the minute as well as the 'to do list'!

A tight schedule is definately on the cards; next saturday see's us on a 'Mac Taster' with some of the funds going into our JustGiving account (thanks Steve). Best start polishing up the tulip/map reading skills pronto!
